Description

::: Year :::
2005

::: Industry :::
Small Business Retail

::: Client Profile :::
Second Edition Books is a small buyer and seller of new and used books. Established in Columbia, they now operate a few stores in Maryland.

::: Project Objective :::
With a limited budget, the client requested a simple informational website to supplement its online shop at amazon.com where browsers can get directions, contact employees and find valuable coupons.

::: Target Audience :::
Thrifty booklovers of all ages

::: Tools Used:::
Adobe Illustrator CS2
Adobe Photoshop CS2
Adobe GoLive CS2
SwishMax

::: Project Process :::
• Using a simple storefront housed in a bland shopping center the client lacked any visual identity to distinguish it from its competitors. The client originally suggested the use of blue and yellow (the colors used in its generic shelf category dividers) for the design, but upon review decided the design needed warmer, more inviting colors.
• The colors burgundy and gold evoke a warm, sophisticated feel as they’re also popular on many classic hardbacks. A fancy font and decorative ornaments add playfulness. In addition to being the main product, the "open book" icon represents accessibility and discovery.
• A simple HTML website was created and styled with CSS, rollover buttons and imported graphics. A flash-animated advertisement was later added to promote special member benefits.

::: Skills Mastered :::
• CSS Development in GoLive
• Photoshop and Illustrator integration with GoLive
• Template Utilization in GoLive

::: Designer Comments :::
Created the graphics and layout in Illustrator CS, then added web functionality in GoLive CS. Flash elements were created with SwishMax.
